How microneedling supports hair growth

Microneedling for Hair Loss in Ottawa–Gatineau: What to Expect + Why We Use the TWIST Handpiece

Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the scalp. This “micro-injury” signals your body to release growth factors and stimulates follicular stem cells—helping thinning hair look denser over time. Dermatology sources note it’s most often used for androgenetic alopecia (male/female pattern hair loss) and in some cases alopecia areata; it can be used on its own or alongside therapies like minoxidil or PRP depending on the plan you and your clinician choose. Expected side effects are temporary redness/tenderness; in-office treatment is preferred over DIY rollers for safety and consistency.

Why Mahaba uses the TWIST microneedling handpiece

We chose TWIST because of its engineering and safety:

  • Powerful, ergonomic handpiece with the motor set perpendicular to the needles—improves stability, reduces vibration, and supports consistent results.
  • SilkTouch™ long-stroke, high-speed needling (up to 150 strokes/sec) shortens time needles spend in skin → less sensation, efficient sessions.
  • Active Needle Retrieval (ANR™) actively pulls needles out (not just spring return), reducing drag/tearing—many clients find numbing unnecessary on face; for scalp, the protocol avoids numbing by design.
  • Flow-back safety valves & sterile, disposable tips to minimize cross-contamination.
  • Optimized 6-needle cartridge designed to puncture precisely without excessive pressure.
These device attributes are designed to create controlled micro-injury with reduced trauma and repeatable depth—key for scalp work.

Treatment process at Mahaba (Hair & Scalp protocol)

  1. Consultation & scalp prep - We assess the pattern and cause of hair loss, review medications/health history, set goals, and take baseline photos. You’ll arrive with clean, dry hair. (No numbing cream is used on the scalp.)
  2.  In-clinic session (about 30–45 minutes) - Needling depth typically ~0.5 mm for scalp; endpoint is even pinkness rather than pinpoint bleeding.
Small circular or linear passes are made between follicles; session speed is set high to avoid micro-scratches.
Clinic-grade serums are applied during/after (per protocol).
  3.  Frequency & course - A typical course is 8 sessions, weekly or every two weeks, with daily at-home scalp lotion between visits; photos track progress. Some improvement can appear earlier, but best gains build gradually through the series and in the 1–3 months after the last session.
  4.  At-home care - Avoid washing hair for 24 hours post-treatment; then resume gentle shampoo. Use the prescribed Hair Lotion nightly on clean, dry scalp (can be paired with a 0.2 mm home-roller a few times a week if advised). SPF/hat recommended outdoors.

Benefits & expected results

  • Density & thickness: Many clients notice improved hair fullness where thinning was present (results vary by cause and severity).
  • Scalp health: Better circulation/signaling can support healthier follicles and improved hair quality.
  • Low downtime: Pinkness/tenderness typically settle within 24–48 hours; most return to normal routines quickly.

FAQs

Does it hurt?
Most clients describe scalp microneedling as tolerable pressure/prickle. Sessions are fast due to the device’s high speed and stroke design. Tenderness typically fades within 24–48 hours.

How many sessions will I need?
Plan for 8 sessions (weekly or bi-weekly) with daily at-home lotion; we reassess at the end of the series. Maintenance can be scheduled as needed.

Who’s a good candidate?
Those with thinning (not completely scarred/bald areas) from androgenetic alopecia often benefit; some alopecia areata cases may be considered. We’ll confirm your hair loss type first.

Can I work out afterward?
Wait 24–48 hours before sweaty workouts or heat (saunas/steam), then ease back in if scalp redness has settled.

Can I combine it with minoxidil/PRP?
Often yes—dermatology sources use microneedling as an adjunct. We’ll sequence therapies so they don’t interfere with healing or with the in-clinic protocol.
